Streamlining Field Data and Daily Reporting on a Large-Scale Lead Remediation Project
BBJ Group is a full-service environmental consulting and engineering firm headquartered in Chicago, with more than 100 employees and nine regional offices across the U.S. The firm has worked in all 50 U.S. states, Puerto Rico, and 28 countries, and has been using QNOPY for nearly three years.
BBJ Group is using QNOPY to manage field data and daily reporting on a large lead shot remediation project for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at a National Wildlife Refuge.
The project involves remediation of a former lead shot and bullet bunker area, with field teams overseeing excavation activities and collecting hundreds of confirmation samples.
The Project
Since July, BBJ field staff have been on site five days a week overseeing excavation work. The project includes:
-
Hundreds of sidewall samples
-
Hundreds of base-of-excavation samples
-
Daily field observations and readings
-
Designated progress photos
-
Daily progress and tailgate updates
BBJ used QNOPY to capture and track this information as work progressed in the field.
Before QNOPY
Previously, field information was managed through a combination of Excel spreadsheets and paper field sheets, with paper records uploaded at the end of the day.
Moving the workflow into QNOPY gave both the field and office teams a more direct way to work with project data.
Real-Time Field QC
One of the biggest benefits for BBJ has been the ability for office staff to review field data while work is happening.
The same approach is used across groundwater sampling and soil investigation projects. Office staff can check progress, review collected data, and identify potential field issues without waiting for crews to return from the site.
“If there are any field issues, we can address them right away based on what’s happening in the field at that time.”
— Justin Button-Hutchens, P.E., Branch Manager, BBJ Group
This has helped BBJ streamline field QC while improving visibility between field and office teams.
One Click at the End of the Day
Daily reporting has also become significantly simpler.
Throughout the day, field staff take photos at designated locations and upload them along with their field notes. At the end of the day, QNOPY can generate the day’s field notes and photo log with a single export.
“At the end of the day, you’re just clicking one button to export the field notes and the photo log for the day. That saves a lot of time.”
— Justin
For crews coming off a 12-hour field day, eliminating manual report assembly makes a meaningful difference.
What’s Next
BBJ is now exploring taking the workflow one step further by using QNOPY’s API capabilities to automate portions of the daily project update.
The goal is simple: collect the information once in the field, then make the reporting and communication that follows as automatic as possible.
As Justin put it:
“We like working with QNOPY a lot.”
From field collection and real-time QC to photo logs and daily deliverables, QNOPY is helping BBJ keep a complex remediation project moving while reducing the administrative work required from its field teams.
QNOPY is a connected environmental data management platform that simplifies field collection, laboratory workflows, GIS mapping, project management, and reporting - all in one secure system.
