Borehole SB-2. Gloves on, sun on the tablet, three more intervals before the rig moves. What's in your hand is organic material, laced with more than a trace of fine-to-medium sand. Slightly moist. Loose. Roots threaded through it.


The boring log has to capture all of that in the right order, with the right qualifiers because the reviewer, the regulator, and the engineer who reopens this file three years from now all need it to read exactly like every other entry in the log. That's the real job: not picking a soil type but writing a sentence that stays correct and consistent across hundreds of entries you didn't write.
